VISITING COMMITTEE

MONTHLY REPORT HIGH SCHOOL AFFAIRS Messrs C. J. Flay and A. Betts, the visiting committee of the Te Awamutu District High School, placed • the following report before members i on Friday night. The report was ’ adopted and Messrs Flay and Betts i were thanked for it. ; Despite the very dry autumn, the j grounds and playing areas are in a i very good condition. They are also of [ a neat and well-kept appearance, j (thanks to the continuous efforts of ; the caretaker, Mr Menary). The various classes appear to be , happy and contented and working j well. There is a will to get something ; accomplished. Generally speaking, the amenites for the scholars are second to none; several very good improvements have been made, but there are still a few necessary additions required. The central heating in the classrooms on the south side is not sufficient on a cold winter’s morning. It would be much better if the steam pipes were running along both sides of the building. Some of the class rooms, especially the metalwork room, are very cramped and extra space is urgently needed. Better facilities in the form ■ of small tables are also needed in the cooking room. The young grass is coming away nicely, but an improved fence and new gate leading to it is required at the west end of the school. The bottom of the incinerator has passed its days of usefulness and a new one is required. Several of the ventilators at the base of the building have been • broken and permit the entry of rats, I and some have even found their way i to the cooking room. These will need attention. Apart from the enclosed quadrangles, there is only one tarsealed court suitable for basket-ball or tennis. The clay court has a good surface, and it would be an advantage if it could be sealed. In conclusion, we would stress the need for more class looms, a gymnasium and a changing room for the boys, Also we wish to compliment the pricipal and staff for the excellent results that they are obtaining under somewhat cramped and trying conditions.
