Lack of Interest Alleged
Charging the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association with lack of interest in defence, Mr W. D. Russell (Christchurch), convener of the defence sub-committee, told the annual conference of the Association that it was making a grave mistake if it thought fighting was over and vL-re was no need to bother about defence. Without discssion, the conference strongly recommended that the Government provide a scheme for compulsory physical and military training based on the requirements of the three services. It was also urged that the Government should provide adequate naval, military, and air defence immediately satisfactory arrangements could be made with the Commonwealth and Imperial Governments as to what those requirements would be. It was recommended that mufti allowance be paid for regular force members who had served overseas.
