REFRESHER TRAINING

COURSE FOR TRAFFIC INSPECTORS The first of a series of refreshed I and training courses for traffic inspeci tors was held in Wellington during the week, May 13th to 18th, under the | guidance of departmental officers. ‘‘This course is being held in order that inspectors who have joined the department during the war may be given the opportunity of brushing up the finer points of traffic control, and of studying the theoretical as well as the practical Tside of their duties,” said Mr A. E. Forsyth, eivil engineer of the department, who had much to do with the planning of the course. “Because of .the conditions at the time of their engagement, this was denied them, so it was decided to train them as a group in Wellington, rather than as individuals in their own districts.” Many of the trainees are returned soldiers, and few have had previous experience with the department. Of the 50 who are to undergo this training, 14 attended the opening session, and about a dozen will go at intervals to Wellington to each of the four succeeding sessions. Generally, instruction is given which covers all aspects of the- duties required of an inspector. Demonstrations and tests are given and all points are discussed. While undergoing the vigilance tests, trainees are under the supervision of the assistant chief inspector, Mr J. H. Semple, and Mr L. S. Heamshaw, Director of the Industrial Psychology Division. Trainees also attended a mock couit, complete with magistrate, court orderly, prosecutors and defence counsel. Trainees were required to give evidence, and to support it with diagrams and exhibits. Each in turn brought a test “case” in the court with an experienced officer conducting the “defence” and, be it assured, a very interested and critical gallery of other trainees looking on.
