PRODUCTION COUNCIL

FORMED IN TE AWAMUTU RECOGNITION SOUGHT COMMITTEES SET UP At yesterday’s meeting of the Te Awamutu Farmers’ Union a circular was received from the Hamilton Primary Production Council outlining the future work of the Councils in regard to appeals for farm workers called for military service. After the circular had been read, the President (Mr A. S. Wyllie) said that a stage had now been reached where the farmers were as important as the men in the armed forces. “It is now an all-in policy,” he said, and farmers must pull their weight in the direction suggested by the Minister of Primary Production. It is our duty to-day to set up a committee on the lines laid down in the circular.” Lengthy discussion followed, Mr J. L. Wallis eventually moving the following resolution: “That an area around Te Awstmutu be defined, a tentative Production Council set up and an application made to the Minister for official recognition.” Mr A. E. Bryant seconded. The motion was carried, the following amendment, moved by Mr S. A. Ammon and seconded by Mr G. T. Crawley, being defeated: “That a committee of three be appointed by this meeting to secure information in respect of men called from district committees to be forwarded to the Hamilton Council.”

The meeting agreed that failing recognition as an independent body, the committee would continue to work with the Hamilton Primary Production Council. The following committee of eight was elected: Messrs A. S. Wyllie (chairman), S. A. Ammon (secretary), G. T. Crawley, T. L. Skerman, W. McGill, A. E. Bryant, C. S. Alexander and C. North.

The chairman, secretary and Mr Crawley were appointed a sub-com-mittee to give immediate attention to urgent matters, in such cases the district representative to also give evidence.

District committees were formed as under:— Te Kawa, Mr J. L. Wallis; Pokuru, Mr C. S. Alexander; Puahue, Messrs G. T. Crawley, L. S. Richards and T. L. Skerman; Ngahape, Mr W. McGill; Kihikihi, Messrs G. Donaldson and J. S. Pattison; Korokonui, Mr J. R. Kay; Wharepuhunga, Mr F. Gooder; Te Mawhai, Messrs W. S. Earwaker and E. C. Perrott; Pukeatua, Messrs J. Rea and A. A. Johnson; Hairini, Messrs S. A. Ammon and W. J. Hodgson; Orakau, Messrs A. E. Bryant and G. R. Lawry; Pirongia, Mr J. Livingstone; Te Rahu, Mr C. J. Flay; Tokanui, Mr A. S. Wyllie; Arohena, Mr A. Weal; Wharepapa, Messrs O’Brien and Jepson. It was pointed out that all farmers wishing to lodge appeals in respect of men called for service would be able to contact their district representatives, who could then set the necessary machinery in motion.

The following is to go forward to the Council as’ a recommendation:— “That steps be taken to ensure that all men working on farms remain in their positions for the duration of the war, unless the necessary permission to leave is obtained.”
