The Misses Betty Dunn and Lorna Regan commenced duties at the Union Bank of Australia Ltd., this morning. Private A-. A. Rushbrooke is spending furlough at his home in Te Mawhai. Mr and Mrs L. H. Qonnolly, Hairini, announce the engagement of theirl only daughter, Rita Ann, to Corporal Robert Chalmers (New Zealand Tank Brigade), son of Mr and Mrs W. R. Douglas, Alexandra Street, Te Awamutu. Messrs K. C- Rickit, W. Swain, and A- S. Wallace were re-elected unopposed to the directorate of Couriers ‘ (N.Z.) Ltd. at the thirty-first annual meeting of the company on Monday evening. The engagement is announced between Mary Beryl, only daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Cruickshank, Racecourse Road, and Driver Vincent Henry (Second NZ.E.F., overseas), son of Mr and Mrs C- O’Brien, Gladstone, Masterton. The death occurred on Saturday of Mr Ewen McGregor, of Hamilton, .aged 81. Born at Matarawa, • near Wanganui, he was the fifth son of Mr Alexander McGregor, who had come from Inverness, Scotland, to New Zealand in 1851. He passed his childhood in the troublous period of the Maori wars. When little more than a youth he, with his brothers, took up a large block of virgin country at Paraekaretu, in the Turakina Valley, where he experienced the hardships and privation of the early settlers. Later he acquired a large block of virgin country in the Rangitikei, and for many years was a successful sawmiller and farmer there. Mr McGregor is survived by his wife, a son, Mr E. J. McGregor, of Taupiri, and a daughter, Mrs J. M. McWhannell, of Ngahieapouri. His younger son was the late Squadron-Leader M. C. McGregor, D.F.C- and Bar, a pioneer of commercial aviation in New Zealand and participant in the Melbourne Centenary air . race, who was killed at Rongotai aerodrome in February, 1936.
