AMERICAN PEOPLE
MIXTURE OF RACES “America js a land of many peoples and how President Roosevelt has contrived to carry America with him step by step is more than a matter for wonder. According to the census of 1930 the United States contained 13,366,406 persons of foreign birth. Of these the largest single group, the Italians, numbered 1,790,000; the next largq«t, the Germans, 1,608,000; the emigrants from Great Britain and Northern Ireland, 1,402,000; the Canadians, 1,278,000; and the Poles, 1,268,000. Those born in what is now Eire came far to the rear, with only 745,000. A large proportion of the Canadians were, of course, French-Canadians. Beyond these foreign-born lay a still larger body of people whose parents or grandparents were foreign bom, and who felt some tie with the ancient motherland.”—From “The World Today,” by Professor A. Nevins.
