SPECIAL SURVEY

among THE BRITISH PEOPLE

“To take full advantage of the British experience the American Institute of Public Opinion asked its British affiliate, the British Institute of public Opinion, to conduct a special survey among the people of Britain in all walks of life on the following questions:—

“ ‘ In the light of the British people’s two years’ war experience, what mistakes would you warn the<American people to try to avoid ? ’ “ The survey was conducted in less than three days, with the aid of the telegraph in Britain, the British interviewers wiring their returns to the British Institute headquarters in London. The results were then cabled to New York. Following .are the ten chief warnings given in order of mention:—

“ ‘ Make sure that before men go into action they are completely equipped, particularly with tanks and aeroplanes. Don’t make our mistake of under-rating the power of the enemy. Organise your man-power and woman-power efficiently and at once. Don’t take half-way measures. Eliminate all red tape—don’t put up with inefficient administration. We lost valuable time that way. Get set immediately for air raids, and pay special attention to fire-fighting and civilian watching service. Be sure your commanders are thoroughly schooled in modern fighting technique: this war is different from the last one. Make sure all branches of the fighting forces co-operate completely with each other. Remember Norway and Crete. Deal drastically with fifth columnists now—don’t wait. Ensure Government control of war materials and industry, and eliminate profiteering.”—Dr George Gallup, director of American Institute of Public Opinion.
