VERSE
AUSTRALIA CALLS The test is here. The last deluding hope .. Is swept away From those who, grasping at a flimsy rope, Thought Fate to stay. Now is the hour to look with seeing eyes On a stern scene, Nor to consider, with a weakling’s sighs, What might have been. Long have our soldiers been baptised in war, But they have known Its rigours far away from the fair shore That is their own. Now are our brazen skies with anger rife And rain of death: Our pulses leap with consciousness of strife And quickened breath. —“ Oriel ”in the Melbourne Argus.
