Mrs L. E. Rice has returned to Te Rore after a holiday spent in Auckland.

Mrs A. B. Carter, who has been visiting Auckland for the past two weeks, has returned to Otorohanga.

Mrs O. M. Coverdale has returned to Te Kawa from a fortnight’s holiday at Tauranga.

Mr and Mrs Francis Battson have returned to Te Awamutu after a fortnight’s holiday visit to Tauranga.

Mrs K. H. Thorsen, of Te Kawa, has returned home after several weeks spent at Mount Maunganui.

Mrs J. B. McLean, of Te Kawa, has left to spend a holiday at Mount Maunganui.

Mrs A. Thorsen has returned to Te Kawa accompanied by her mother, Mrs Anderson, of Marton.

Mrs A. M. Stewart, who has been spending a holiday in Wellington, has returned to Te Kawa.

Mr and Mrs Nelson Hall and their wee son Trevor spent Easter with Mrs C. B. Hall, of Kihikihi, and have now returned home to Auckland.

Mr A. E. O. Robertson, of Otorohanga, has received advice that his son, Private Albert William Robertson, has been wounded in action.

Mrs C. S. McLean and Miss Phyllis McLean have returned to Te Kawa after spending several weeks at Mt. Maunganui.

Mr and Mrs A. Pettigrew, of Hangatiki, have received a cable message from their son, Private Roy Pettigrew, saying that he is fit and well.

Mr L. A. Parlane has returned to Te Kuiti to take up his duties as clerk of the Court after having been engaged in relieving work in Wellington.

Mr and Mrs Frank Tappin and their daughter Jean, of Feilding, and Mrs J. Jillett, of Trentham, are the guests of Mr and Mrs L. H. Connolly, of Hairini.

Mr N. E. Jory, adviser to the Dominion Oil Fuel Controller, Wellington, is at present on a visit to Te Awamutu, and is the guest of Mr and Mrs H. J. Magill. He is accompanied by Mrs Jory.

Mr T. H. Kelly, of Arohena, who has been attending the Labour Party Conference in Wellington as representative of the Waitomo Labour Representation Committee, returned to Te Awamutu this morning.

Mr Percy Johnson, formerly a resident of Otorohanga, visited Mr and Mrs M. J. Hilder during the holidays. He is a son of the late Judge Dunbar Johnson, who officiated at the Otorohanga Land Court in the early days. Mr Johnson expressed surprise and pleasure at the growth of the southern town.

Following is a list of Air Force and Navy trainees on educational courses in the Waikato who have passed the Air Force preliminary examinations for radio personnel held on 16th and 17th March: Entry to Air Force: FO. Cleave (Hamilton), T. A. Davis (Thames), A. Francis (Morrinsville), G. W. Vicary (Te Kuiti). Entry to Navy: F. W. D. Bowman (Arapuni).

Friends of Mr and Mrs Fred Phillips, of Otorohanga, will be pleased to hear of the success of their son Denis, who volunteered on the outbreak of war, and went to a training camp, obtaining the rank of second lieutenant. He left New Zealand with the first echelon for the Middle East, where he was promoted to lieutenant, and now has the rank of captain.

Advice has been received that Matthew C. Farrer, son. of Mr and Mrs M. R. Farrer, of Te Kuiti, has been granted a commission in the Fleet Air Arm. Sub-Lieutenant Farrer, vftio is 19 years old, left New Zealand in May, 1941, and carried out his training in Great Britain. He was educated at Southwell School, Hamilton, and the Wanganui Collegiate School, and at the time of enlisting was studying at Auckland University College.

At 6 p.m. on Sunday next all ZB stations will feature a further recorded talk, in the Social Justice series, by Rev. Matthew Calder. Mr Calder spent Easter at his home in Auckland, it being hoped that the sudden change of climate would prove beneficial to the severe rheumatic condition from which he as still suffering. These hope® proved groundless, however, and Mr Calder has now returned to the Rotorua Sanatorium for further treatment.

Prior to leaving for camp, Mr P. Baikie, who has been supervisor at the Otorohanga Post Office for some years, was presented by the staff with a small token of regard for his help and comradeship. The postmaster, Mr Whyte, who made the presentation, remarked that Mr Baikie would be greatly missed from the office, and wished him best of luck in his military service and an early return to civil occupation. Mr Baikie suitably replied.

The death has occurred in Hamilton of Mr R. A. Kendall James, third son of Mr and Mrs Andrew H. James, pioneer Waikato settlers. Born at Te Rore sixty-six years ago, Mr James resided in the Te Rore district all his life except for about three years spent in Taranaki in his youth. About thirty-five years ago he acquired the property known as “ the old Te Rore flat,” near the bridge, and he farmed it successfully until his retirement in 1939, since when he had resided in Te Awamutu and Hamilton. Mr James was unmarried.

Appreciation of the work done by the superintending minister during his six years in Hamilton was voiced by representatives of the Methodist churches of the district at a farewell to the Rev. R. B. Tinsley and Mrs Tinsley in St. Paul’s Sunday School Hall at Hamilton on Wednesday. Mr Tinsley is to leave shortly to take up duties as superintending minister of the Hastings circuit. He was presented with a wallet and Mrs Tinsley with a bouquet from the Ladies’ Guild. Musical items were given by members of the congregation.
