TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
(As reported in the “Waipa Post,” 13th February, 1917.) A slight outbreak of fire occurred during the day performance at the Empire Theatre on Saturday afternoon. The alarm was sounded and the Fire Brigade was quickly on the scene. The fire at one stage spread to the roof, but was quickly checked and no material damage was done. It would have been possible to continue with the screening of pictures at the evening performance, but it was decided to have a thorough inspection made, and accordingly the evening fixture was abandoned. At a meeting of the Hairini suppliers of the Waikato Co-operative Dairy Company, it was stated that the price paid for cheese, namely 9id, was an excellent figure, but as a matter of fact New Zealand cheese that day in London was worth 12id f.d.b. in Auckland. Mr Goodfellow congratulated the suppliers on the excellent quality of the cheese made at Hairini. Out of 1300 crates, manufactured this season only four had been second grade, while seven were damaged in transit during the recent railway slip. During the past week recruiting at the Hamilton office has been very brisk, no less than 55 men having been attested. The list includes: Dudley Bockett and Allan R. I. Taylor (Te Awamutu), Emile E. Le Prou (Te Rau-a-moa),. Claude L. Mexted (Otorohanga), Edward McFlinn (Kihi-, kihi), and Edward C. Beet (Pirongia). Amongst the appointments of officers proceding on active service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force for duty abroad appears the name of Nurse C. E. Cutforth, who for some time practised her profession in Te Awamutu (and who is now Mrs A. G. Warburton).
