One of the acts of the Germans in Paris has been the opening of the safe-deposits in the various banks. In one bank was a safe belonging to an old lady in black. The officer in charge said, “May I beg of you, Madame, to be good enough to . . ” Certainly sir,” replied the lady, and when the safe was opened the officer was amazed to see nothing whatever but a shining sword. He turned to the lady, who simply said, “That is my late husband’s sword. I am the widow of Marshal Foch.” The officer turned pale, saluted, and withdrew. A party of Chinese seamen provided some amusing interludes for visitors to the St. Clair beach, Dunedin, on a recent Sunday afternoon. They ar- - rived at the beach in four taxi-cabs, driven by women taxi-drivers, and it was not long before they had a circle of children round them. When the reason for this became better known the ring of children grew considerably larger in no time. The Chinese were “shouting” ice creams and soft drinks. One member of the party raised a good laugh with his attempts to ride a bicycle for the first time in his life. They later left, as they arrived, in a fleet of taxis.
