INTERCESSION

YESTERDAY’S SERVICE. The weekly Intercession Service was held in the Town Hall yesterday, when a fair number of people attended. The Rev. J. Pattison presided, and Mrs M. G. Sullivan officiated at the piano. After the singing of the National Anthem and the hymn “ Lead, Kindly Light,” His Worship the Mayor, Mr L. G. Armstrong, read the Lesson from I. Samuel Chapter IV. In a short address) the Rev. J. Pattison stressed the need for confession and repentance and the value of prayer. He offered prayers for those •in authority in all the Allied countries. Mr B. McGechie quoted eminent military and naval leaders who had declared their faith in prayer, and followed with prayers for all those serving on land, on the sea, and in the air. The gathering then sang two verses of the hymn “Abide With Me.” The Rev. H. Spencer offered pray ers for the sick, wounded, and o»p--pressed, and for the children who were suffering through the war. The final prayer for the doctors, nurses, stretcher-bearers, and members of the Red Cross and St. John’s Ambulance was led by Mr A. H. Laybourn, who also spoke of the ministers and chaplains of all denominations who were ministering to the souls of the men overseas. The singing of two further verses of the hymn “ Abide With Me ” brought the service to a close.
