NO RECONSIDERATION

rationing of phosphates. MINISTER’S REPLY To REPRESENTATIONS. “ It was agreed after the very careful consideration that the basis of the last two years’ usage of phosphatic fertiliser was the most satisfactory one that can be adopted, and I regret that no departure from this principle can be made.” This sentence, in a letter from the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. J. G. Barclay, sums up his reply to the representations made to him by the Northern King Country Sub-Provincial Executive at its meeting at Te Kuiti last weelk, when it

urged the necessity for more eration being given to light hill country in the rationing of manure. Mr Barclay states that th© regulations as gazetted were- given very full consideration before being printed. “ It must be realised,” he states, “ that only a limited quantity of phosphatie fertiliser was available for distribution, and this amount had to be distributed in accordance with the national interest, and in a fashion which was as equitable as possible. Before the regulations Were gazetted leading memibers of farmers’ organisations were consulted, and the National Council of Primary Production approved the scheme as being the most satisfactory which could be adopted. It was realised that some anomalous positions would be created, and as far as possible these will be met by local committees.” The Minister goes on to state that where, however, farmers obtained the amount to which they were entitled

he regretted that it would not be possible to make any alteration in their favour. Also, the case which has been set out on behalf of the farmers at the meeting would apply to considerable areas other than the King Country.
