FORCED TO PAY

EUROPE’S PRIVILEGE. ENORMOUS TRIBUTE EXACTED. The British Foreign Under-Secre tary, Mr R. A. Butler, told the House of Commons something of the penal ties which Europe is forced to pay for the privilege of Nazi occupation and domination. Mr Butler said that the total toll exacted from the unfortunate continent by Germany was approximately £1,150,000,000. Norway was the heaviest sufferer, paying something like £4O per head of the population. France had to find £2O per head, which was far greater than any penalty imposed on Germany through war debts or reparations after 1919. Mr Butler said Denmark had to pay £26,000,000 a year for the privilege of being economically devastated by her Nazi overlords. Belgium was paying £75,000,000, and Holland £54,000,000. Hitler, added Mr Butler, was also collecting money tribute from Poland, Rumania and Bulgaria. In addition, all the conquered countries were forced to provide fod, raw materials, manpower for labour, and facilities for transport of German troops, police, “tourists,” goods, etc.
