TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
AS REPORTED IN THE WAIPA POST, 23rd MAY, 1913. This week’s list of local recruits accepted for service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces includes H. O. Kay, W. B. Pollard (Te Awamutu), J. S. Dearlove, R. C. Robinson (Pirongia), J. C. McConkey (Mangapiko), and J. P. Robinson (Oparau). Lieutenant Stewart Alexander (of Mangapiko), of C Squadron Waikato Mounted Rifles, has received his commission and is notified to hold himself in readiness to join the overseas forces. A movement is afoot to promote a river service to operate regularly on the Waipa River. A company, stylec the Waipa-Waikato Farmers’ Co-op. Steam Navigation Company, is being formed. A Young Ladies’ Club has been formed in Te Awamutu. A serious case of honey poisoning is reported from Korakonui, three sons of Mr J. A. Jamieson having been violently ill after partaking of honey gathered from a box-hive. Five district farmers fromi Paterangi, Ohaupo main road, and Kihikihi were fined in the local Court yesterday for failure to exterminate rabbits on their farms. The Borough Council is negotiating the purchase of land for the opening of a road (now George St.) between Arawata Street and Park Road. Settlers in the Mangapiko watershed have decided to recommend an amalgamation of drainage boards. The Borough Council has debated the advantages of afternoon or evening meetings, and after a prolonged discussion decided in favour of evening meetings. Councillors S. Clark ■G. Spinley, M. C. Lawson, and F. H. Vile thereupon tendered their resignations.
