AUSTRALIAN PLANS. 'Early construction in Australia of a high-powered short-wave radio station, comparable with 8.8. C., Berlin, and other high-powered stations providing international programmes, has-been recommended to

the Federal Government by Postal Department enginers. The estimated cost is understood to be about £250,000 (writes the Sydney correspondent of The Press). It would take a year to construct, but units could be brought into operation much earlier. Cabinet has already evusidered the proposal and will pivbably make a decision shortly. It is proposed to build the station in Victoria. The recommendation followed a survey, just completed, of the reception of Australian news programmer, broadcast to Australian forces abroad. The report disclosed that reception generally is unsatisfactory. Even in Malaya it is being badly and consistently marred by static and fading. The Australian service there is greatly inferior to those from Berlin and other Axis stations. Plans provide for three separate transmitters, each of a power of at least 100 kilomatts. Each transmitter would be much more powerful than those now used for the Australian short-wave overseas -service.
