A ROYAL LETTER

QUEEN VICTORIA WROTE TO THE TIMES. Queen Victoria once wrote a letter in her own hands to the editor of the Times. The purpose of the letter was to correct a widespread rumour that she was about to go out of mourning for the Prince Consort, who had died three years before. After his death the Queen did not appear in public, even to open Parliament, and there was much public dissatisfaction at her long seclusion. In her letter to the Times the Queen wrote concerning the rumour that she intended to leave off mourning: “This idea cannot be too explicity contradicted. The Queen heartily appreciates the desire of her subjects to see her, and whatever she can do to gratify them in this loyal and affectionate wish she will do. But there are other and higher duties than those of mere representation which are now thrown upon the Queen, alone and unassisted—duties which she cannot neglect without injury to the public service, overwhelming her with work and anxiety.”
