SPIRIT OF ANZAC

OUR BOYS IN EGYPT. “SOUND AS ENGLAND.” “The spirit of our division is as sound as the heart of England,” said Major-general Sir John Duigan. Chief of the General Staff, in a broadcast talk on Sunday on his recent visit to the Npw Zealanders in the Middle East.

“Our boys are in great fettle and ready for anything,” he said. “The New Zealand base camp is wonderfully situated, well laid out, and within easy reach of Cairo, and the men in the desert when I saw them were comfortably installed in bivouacs well dug in. They were being subjected to bombing raids by the Italians on clear, moonlight nights, but, with the planes flying high, I am happy to say, the casualties from these raids could be counted on the fingers of one hand.” General Duigan concluded by saying that he felt confident that the members of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force would fully maintain the standard set by their fathers in the last war, and would acquit themselves creditably in duties they were called upon to perform.
