Mr and Mrs B. C. O’Connor, of Ohaupo, spent the holidays at Waihi Beach.

Mr and Mrs G. O. Jourdain, who spent three weeks’ glorious holidays at Waihi Beach, have returned home.

Mrs Sid Waite, of Pirongia, is away holiday-making at Waihi, and is staying with Mr and Mrs J. Foster.

Mrs W. H. Bell, of Pirongia, is spending an extended holiday at Kawhia.

Mr and Mrs James Dean returned yesterday after a three weeks’ holiday tour of the South Island.

Mrs Eric Bell has returned to Pirongia after several days with her parents at Te Kawa.

Mrs R. Bryant, Lower Hutt, has been spending an extended holiday with relatives in Pirongia.

Mr Henry Warren, of Roto-o-Rangi, has returned home after a three weeks’ holiday visit to Auckland.

Mrs L. Palmer, of Otorohanga, has left for Honolulu, where she will spend a holiday.

Miss Mullany, of Wellington, is visiting Te Awamutu as the guest of Mr and Mrs R. C. Schofield.

Mrs T. Bray and family have returned home to Pirongia after a very enjoyable holiday at Otahuhu.

Mr and Mrs K. C. Rickit (senr.) returned to town last evening after spending three weeks’ holiday at Raglan.

Mrs H. Summers, National Park, has returned home after a short holiday with her mother, Mrs A. S. Beatson, of Pirongia.

Friends will be pleased to hear that Mrs B. Du Fresne, of Pirongia, who has been suffering with a badly injured foot, is steadily recovering.

Mr W 7 . S. Oakley, who has acted as night-watchman in Te Awamutu for the past two years, has given notice of his intention to relinquish the position owing to ill-health.

Miss D. Ashmore, of Auckland, and Miss Margaret Green, of Hamilton, are the guests of Mrs J. Millen, of Parawera.

Constable H. Rush, of the Te Awamutu station, who has been under notice of transfer to National Park for some time, has received advice to take up his new duties next week.

The engagement is announced between Leonard Charles, younger son of Mr and Mrs E. L. Strawbridge, Kio Kio, and Shirley Cherry, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Ben Board, Hangatiki.

Mrs M. H. Tims and Mrs H. Kay, accompanied by Miss W. Wyllie, of Papatoetoe, have left on a visit to Tauranga, after which they proceed to Taupo to indulge in trout-fishing.

Mr Alex Tims, son of Mr Martin Tims, will leave at the week-end to enter the camp at Narrow Neck, where he will train to become a noncommissioned officer in the Waikato Mounteds.

Promotion to the rank of flight lieutenant has been granted to FlyingOfficer G. R. (“Digger”) Magill, Royal Air Force, formerly of Hamilton. The advice has been received by Mr R. W. Magill, of Te Aroha, his father.

Mt A. Mann, of London, who will conduct examinations for Trinity College of Music in the North Island this year, has arrived at Auckland from Sydney. Mr Mann conducted examinations in the South Island in 1939, and last year was one of the college’s examiners in Australia.

Hon. W. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, left for Wellington last night. During the next fortnight Mr Martin expects to be busy in Wellington preparing to hand over his portfolio to his successor, Mr J. G. Barclay, M.P. for Marsden. Mr Martin has also announced his intention, owing to failing health, to retire altogether from political life. He will not, therefore, be a candidate for Raglan at the general election at the end of this year.

Some information concerning Private C. H. Humphries, who was reported to have been blinded as a result of an accident while on service overseas, has come to light in Cambridge. The official communication stated that Private Humphries lived with his mother, Mrs C. Humphries of Hilton Road, Cambridge. The name of the town, however, should have been Carterton. However, Private Humphries resided in the Cambridge district about eight years ago. In all, he was in Cambridge for about three years, most of the time farming at Karapiro in partnership with Mr F. Coulter.

Private advice has been received that Pilot Officer Brian Patrick McNamara, only son of Mr and Mrs M. J. McNamara, of Queen Street, Cambridge, lost his life as a result of air operations on 10th January, while serving with the Royal Air Force. Pilot Officer McNamara was born on the West Coast of the South Island, but went to Cambridge with his parents when he was three years old. He was educated at the Cambridge Convent and Sacred Heart College, Auckland. In May, 1939, he paid his fare to England and joined the Royal Air Force before the outbreak of the war.
