WORK OF THE MONTH

IN WAIPA COUNTY. ENGINEER’S REPORT. ' ) The following report of work carried out to 31st December was presented to Monday’s meeting of the Waipa County Council by the engineer, Mr W. Graham Macky:— KAIPAKI RIDING. No special works were carried out during the month; but the usual maintenance work was carried out. PUKEKURA RIDING. Further improvement work was carried out on the bad corners on the Kairangi Road, and this road as well as Hannon’s Road, was patched from Peppercorn’s Pit. RANGIAOHIA RIDING. Jary’s Road was patched from Pollard’s Pit. The bad corners on the Puahue-Hairini Road were surveyed, and proposals are being submitted for improvements. The metalling of Ellicott’s Access Road under free grant, was completed. During the current week fires broke out adjacent to Jary’s Road and Mill Road and threatened the safety of the road, particularly Jary’s Road where there is no clay under the sand. The settlers concerned have given some assistance but it has been necessary to send out the County staff. Proposals for the metalling of Montefiore’s Road under P.W.D. grant, have been submitted to the Department for approval. ORAKAU RIDING. The Kihikihi - Arapuni M.H. was patched with Grinter’s chips and Rea’s Pit shingle. Mangare Road was repaired. Approval for the carrying out of formation and metalling on Tika and Mellsop Roads came to hand ten days ago and work is in hand on both jobs. Arrangements Were made for the hire of a .bull-dozer to help out the County plant. The contractors for scooping the shingle have moved up to the Owairaka after having completed hauling for the Tika Road metalling. MANGAPIKO RIDING. The Te Awamjutu-Pirongia M.H. and the Frankton-Pirongia M;H. were repaired with Pirongia metal. Te Awamutu-Meadway’s Main Road and the Frontier Road were both patched with sand from the Railway Pit. Lake Road was also repaired. Proposals for the formation of 40 chains of Johnson’s Road have been submitted to the P.W.D. for approval. KAKEPUKU RIDING. The usual maintenance work was carried out. The widening on the Waikeria Road was straightened up and additional shingle put on the widened sections. CONSTRUCTION WORK. The final payment for Messrs Goosman’s contract on the FranktonPirongia M.H. was before the meeting on Monday. The Main Highway Board has approved of the tender of Messrs W. S. Goosman and Co. for the re-sealing of 18 miles of first coat work. Chips from the Te Kawa Quarry are being dumped on the Kihikihi-Arapuni M.H. in readiness for sealing. Proposals for the reconstruction of the Te Awamutu-Pirongia and Te Awamutu-Cambridge M.H. were forwarded to the Main Highway Board just prior to Christmas. Messrs Grinter Bros, completed the supply of metal to the dump in Gray’s Pit. GENERAL. All the available pipe for mains for the Melville and Norton Water Supply Areas was laid before Christmas. Last week arrangements were made for the purchase of the 11 inch and S inch piping required for these works, and delivery should be made before the end of the month. Applications for connections to these two schemes are coming in very slowly, only about 50% being in to date. The arrangement whereby the cost of service connections are being pooled, cannot be continued indefinitely, and as soon as an approximate date can be fixed for the laying of the smaller sized mains, ratepayers will be notified that all applications received after that date must be regarded as separate connections and charged accordingly. Also, no arrangement can be finalised with the Fire Board at Hamilton until the Council gets a better indication than it has at present as to whether all householders or not are going to become consumers. A preliminary investigation of costs to date indicates that both loans may yet be completed within the amount of loan money available.
