BAD TIMES FOR PAWNBROKERS
“Uncle” is finding it hard to keep the ball, or rather the three balls i oiling,” says the "Liverpool Post, ’ “and the National Pawnbrokers’ Association has been exercised in its mind for many months now about the decline in trade. This association has given its considered view, after heating the evidence of about a hundred pawnbrokers from many cities. The raising of social standards, the demolition of slums, the moving out to new areas where there is some difficulty in the trader following his trade—these are the main reasons, and the committ recorded that the habit of weekly pawning, which caused the Monday morning queues at the side door, is fast disappearing.”
