HERD IMPROVEMENT

FIGURES FOR DECEMBER. IMPROVEMENT ON PREVIOUS YEAR. The December figures for the Auckland Herd Improvement Association show that the average production from the 80,847 cows under test was 769 lbs milk, 4.69 test and 36.1 lbs fat. For Decejnber, 1938, the 85,137 tested gave an average of 721 lbs milk, 4.59 test and 33.1 lbs fat, while , for December, 1937, the 100,939 cows averaged 776 lbs milk, 4;63 test and 36.0 lbs fat. The best individual producer was a cow in the Whatawhata district which gave 114 lbs fat in the month, while the best herd average was 57 lbs fat from a herd of 34 cows in the Clevedon district. Perhaps a better return was the 55 lbs fat from 61 cows in the Waerenga district, or 55 lbs fat from 41 cows in the Kawhia district. Te Awamutu and district groups compared very well with the Association averages, as will be seen from the following:— Te .Awamutu group’s 856 cows averaged 776 lbs milk, 4.81 test and 37 lbs fat. The best herd, 63 cows, averaged 43 lbs fat, and the best cow gave 74 lbs fat. The 1722 cows in the Te Kawa group averaged 738 lbs milk, 4.95 test and 37 lbs fat. The best herd'average was 44 lbs fat, a figure equalled by two herds. The best cow gave 84 lbs fat. Paterangi group’s 792 cows averaged 729 lbs milk, 4.80 test and 35 lbs fat. The best herd, 34 cows, averaged 41 lbs fat, and the best cow produced 75 lbs fat. Otorohanga group, with 3776 cows (still the largest group in the sociation), averaged 750 lbs milk, 4.64 test and 35 lbs fat. The best herd average was 42 lbs fat, equalled by two herds, and the best cow gave 80 lbs fat. The 2029 cows in the Kihikihi group averaged 738 lbs milk, 4.86 test and 36 lbs fat. The best herd average was 46 lbs fat from 44 cows, and the best cow gave 84 lbs fat. Hairini group’s 1030 cows averaged 729 lbs milk, 4.96 test and 38 lb fat, The best herd, 84 cows, averaged 44 lbs fat, and the best cow gave 93 lbs fat. The 811 cows in the Kaipaki group averaged 732 lbs milk, 4.78 test and 35 lbs fat. The best herd average was 48 lbs fat from 41 cows and the best individual produced 77 lbs fat. Over the range, the Kawhia group, with 765 cows, averaged 821 lbs milk, 4.58 test and 38 lbs fat. The best herd, 51 cows, averaged 55 lbs fat, and the best cow gave 90 lbs fat.
