FEWER JOY-RIDES
PETROL RATIONS IN BRITAIN. “We are not short of petrol in this country; in fact, there are tankers waiting to unload until the storage space can be found for their cargoes. So why ration petrol? Well, in the first place, any real activity on the part of our Air Force, which will apparently only take place in the form of reprisals, plus the movement of motorized divisions in France, and on this side, would alter our total consumption figure to an amazing extent. Add to this the fact that the replacement of this petrol must come from abroad and hat the majirty of it—from the United States and Venezuela—must be paid for in currencies standing at a heavy premium to sterling, and you arrive at a reasonable explanation as to the necessity for curtailing those week-end joyrides.”—Mr W. B. Burton-Baldry, writing in a fortnightly trade review.
