BAND MATTERS

COMING EASTER CONTEST. A BUSY TIME AHEAD.

(By

.Cadence.)

The committee wish to thank .all who assisted in the Christmas Drive for Funds Carnival, held on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve in the main streets; also the public gerier ally who gave so freely, both at the stalls and throughout the district where the band was carolling, as a result of which our funds have bene fitted, and the juvenile band is now' an assured fact.

The Band will l)e playing in the town this (Friday) evening, and all. members are asked to be punctual. The time is 7.15 sharp. \

In spite of reverses, and loss of, members owing to several joining up with the forces, we are continuing to make progress, and are settling down to some hard work in view of the coming contest at Te Aroha at Easter time, when we hope to give quite a good account of ourselves. In view of the fact that time is short, we are now practising on Wednesday nights as well as Monday, and every member is urged to keep these two nights free, and give the bandmaster all help possible in organising for this event.

We hope in the course of a week or two to be able to again put on aj Day of Music, at Albert Park, when we shall have the Hamilton Citizens’ Band, and South. Auckland Pipe JBapd with us again. This performance will be on the lines of the popular qne“ held last May, and we feel assured that the Band will merit the support of the public as in the past. Details will be advertised in this paper ; al a later date. . ••v.-'.-.a --- . ... ..

It was a pity that dwifig to inclement weather, the programme arranged for Kihikihi last Sunday had to be abandoned. We exteiid apologies to our good friends of that district, and will: endeavour tovfulfil our engagement to them in the "near future.

Six: of our members have so fair answered the country’s eall, and four are already in l i Bullock, Ryan, Myers, and Geo. Kidd—while Mac. Haselden, a member of the Band Cricket-Club, is- awaiting a call with the Air Force. To one and all we wish, the best of luck and a speedy return home, with. their duty nobly done. • Congratulations were the order of the evening : last Monday, when our genial Bass player, Mr Sam Rogers, arrived at rehearsal, one hour late, but with a perfectly, legitimate excuse. Sam is again a proud father, and we add one. more future player to our cradle roll. • ••... v

Snowy MeFie, the popuffir drupt- J mer “with a fetish for getting* lost at turnouts,” has become engaged to Miss Peggy Henderson. We offer our felicitations to the happy pair. H.< Broadmore, the boy champion from! Whakatane is competing agaifist’ all comers at the Centennial contest, to be held in Wellington next month. Te Awamutu music lovers will jhave a chance to < hear this clever Instrumentalist in the : near future, foi’ he -is -coming over with the Hamilton Citizens’ Band, and will perform at the- concert to be held in the evening. *• - In conclusion,, it is with sorrow that We record the passing of one of the eldest and most respected, in embers ,of the band, Mr Jack North, who, during his lifetime, rendered yeoman service, both as a player and later as Bandmaster, Mr North was a member of a very bld family in this district, several members of which have “ been actively associated with the Band. The subject of this paragraph had a record extending to nearly thirty years, giving service that was always an encotiragemerit.to others to persevere; he loved mufcic, and his genial and friendly attitude was always appreciated. Very many, younger players have reason to 1 member him with kindly affection, as do those who were, associated with him. The members of his family have the sincere sympathy of all bandsmen in their bereavement.
