APPLES AND PEARS
STATE PURCHASE PLAN. OPERATION NEXT MONTH. The operation of the scheme for the purchase and marketing by the Government of this season's apple and pear crops is expected to begin early next month. Applications are being called for additional fruit inspectors, and also for several positions associated with the distribution, and marketing of apples and pears. The scheme is the result of negotiation between the Government and the New Zealand Fruit Control Board and the Fruitgrowers Federation. The Minister of Marketing, Mr Nash, announced early last month that th» Government had agreed to buy the fruit at an overall average of 5s a case at assembly point. Mr Nash then said that there was a prospect of aheavy yield, and the difficulty facing the Dominion was that the British Government was not able to buy the export crop, as it was doing with all the other main commodities. The war situation had meant that, at a time when the Dominion had a record crop, it would be without its main overseas market. The responsibility for marketing the fruit in the Dominion is to rest with the Internal Division of the Marketing Deparment, while exports overseas are to be under the control of the Export Dvision, similar to other commodities, such as butter and cheese.
