W]ar News: Petrograd reports that the Germans who were driven out of Seirpe continue to retire southward. Paris reports that progress has been made north of Arras, and Zouaves brilliantly attacked with the bayonet, capturing an important position. The Allies continue to advance between Nieuport and Lonxbaerz. In the Vosges country progress is reported west of Ondey. Excellent prices are being obtained fox- Taranaki dairy produce on the London market. Cheese is fetching as high as 77s per cwt, and butter is quoted at 137 s to 138 s.

At a recent meeting of Otorohanga ratepayers the question of raising a furtlxer loan of £lOOO for furnishing and lighting the municipal town hall was considered. A recommendation to provide a picture plant was favourably considered, it being pointed out that moving pictures would prove a most profitable venture to the ratepayers. The poll for the loan is to be held early in February.

No local institution has felt the effects of the war to a gxeater extent than Te Awamutu Town Band. Three months ago there were 26 playing members, but six of them have already left to join the expeditionary forces, and three or foux- more have also left the district.
