WATER SUPPLY

PROGRESS OF IMPROVEMENTS.

CHARGES FOR GARDEN HOSES.

Several matters affecting the municipal water supply came up for discussion at the monthly meeting of Te Awamutu Borough Council last Monday evening. Cr L. S. Armstrong inquired if the engineer had a report to make regarding blow-outs and qther damage to the water supply in Albert Park and at Pirongia during the holiday season. What was the cause ? It seemed that the lead joints were faulty. The engineer said he had received no reports. It was stated that there were several blow-outs, and repairs had been effected as quickly as possible.

Reporting on the water supply dam. Mr Worley said about two-thirds of the silt in the impounding area had been removed, but the dam had not been raised. To Cr Armstrong, the Mayor (Mr G. Spinley) said water meters were •not insisted upon for farm lands within the borough, but meters had to be installed outside the borough., except in what was known as the Ohaupo Road area, formerly part of the borough, where the propertyowners still paid a special rate. It was suggested that there was need for investigation to arrive at an equitable rate charge to all users. The engineer said there was a difference between domestic supply and supply to stock. In other boroughs there was a special charge for hose taps used in gardens, at the rate of £1 for each hose tap and £3 for each sprinkler.
