TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
AS REPORTED IN THE WAIPA POST, 15th JANUARY, 1915. ■Wlar News: The Allies at several points along the Western Front have captured trenches, and in other places have consolidated their holdings. The Germans have heavily bombarded Allies’ positions north-east of Soissons. All reports to hand indicate fierce fighting near Soissons. Te Awamutu committee for the Belgian Relief Fund has now in hand £2l Os 6d, received from the sale of stock by Messrs Dalgety and Company. Wfaipa County Council, on Tuesday. decided to transfer Andrew and. Sons’ contract from Te AwamutuPirongia Road, after the portion opened up is .completed, to Te Awa-mutu-Ohaupo Road, the reason being that metal can be carted on to the latter road only during fine weathqr, whereas the former road is accessible at any time.
Te Awamutu Bowling Club members to play against Cambridge tomorrow are: J. T. North, H. Y. Collins, T. Mdnnes, M. S. Laurie; P. Clements, H. Innes-Jones, W. F. Y. Stewart, C. Bowden; R. L. Henderson, J. McTavish. H. F. Edgecumbe, A. S. Wiallace; H. J. Jones, J. Jackson, W. J. North, D. M. Christian. Wlhen discussing control of noxious weeds at last meeting of the Whipa County Council, the chairman (Mr R. E'ishes) said it was folly to try to carry out the provisions of the Act in their entirety, and he added that if more power were given to local bodies work of greater effectiveness would be done.
Several clumps of ragwort in full bloom are to be seen in various paddocks in the vicinity of Te Awamutu. This noxious weed grows to a height of two feet or over, has a bright yellow flower, and is most difficult to eradicate when once established. On 20th November Colonel H. R. Ryder cabled to the Imperial Army authorities offering his services, and has now been notified by Lord Kitchener to hold himself in readiness to be called at short notice. As the train conveying members of the expeditionary force passed through Te Awamutu on Monday evening on its way to Wellington the following message, on the back of a collar, was thrown off at the local station: “ Off to the front. Dry. God help Smith and Lloyd. All the boys stick together.—J.B.”
