No fewer than 1090 Southdown ewes and 1330 Romney ram hoggets have been shipped to Australia this year by the New Zealand Loand and Mercantile Agency’s stud stock department. Included in the Southdowns was a complete Wairarapa flock of 400 ewes. The Romneys were principally flock ram hoggets, for which there has been a tremendous demand in Australia this They t ere mainly modestly-priOl consignments. The big shipment? by this and other firms should lower entries of our ram fairs in New Year and tend to stiffen the market. At the New Zealand Loan Company’s office in Wellington I saw the only cartoon on the subject of stud stock I have yet seen—from “Punch” of May, 1936, writes a Wellingtonian. The scene is of some Andean valley in South America, wherein are gaucho shepherds and a mounted Englishman who bears a very distinguished expression as he surveys the most impossibly motley collection of sheep—of every shape and size, as mixed as thethe breeds of dogs..
