MUST JOIN THE UNION

BOROUGH EMPLOYEES CONCERNED. Another communication was received by the Borough Council on Monday evening from the local secretary of the Motor Drivers’ Union, from the Auckland secretary of that Union, and the secretary of the Labour Department’s office at Hamilton, concerning the employment of a nonunionist. He had to join the appropriate union or the employer would have to dismiss him.

The clerk said the man referred to had been a member of the General Labourers’ Union and had now been transferred to the Drivers’ Union. But there was objection by the Union to anyone other than the actual employees filling in the employees’ timesheets.

Cf Armstrong recalled that at a previous meeting he had been “knocked back” for suggesting this method. Now the Union demanded it. It was reasonable. The town clerk read a request from the workmen that the works foreman should fill in their time-sheets.

Cr Armstrong doubted the sincerity of that request, and added that the men themselves should be required to fill in their own time-sheets, the foreman to initial them before paymimt. Cr Spiers said if the law required the men to fill in their time-sheets themselves, there was no support forthcoming for Cr Armstrong’s motion that the request be complied with.
