TO AVOID CONFUSING
SMITHFIELD STONE ABOLISHED There are 14 lb. in a stone avoirdupois, buit in the Smithfield meat market a stone has been 8 lb., and all calculations in the purchase of meat were made on that (basis. It is said that the Smithfield stone has been in use for over 200 years in the meat trade. It came into use because it was convenient in reckoning*. If a butcher went to market and bought a live bullock weighing 00, or 70 stone avoirdupois, the carcase would be found to weigh 60 or 70 Smithfield stone after slaughter, dressing, &c. Difference in weight between a live animal and its carcase is in the proportion of 14 to 8. On October 2 the 8 lb. stone was officially abolished in the Smjithfield market, and henceforth a stone of meat will weigh 14 lb. This change is due to the Board of Trade, which decided that the 8 lb. stone is an illegal unit of weight.
