The imminent departure from New Zealand of the first draft of the Air Force to go overseas since the outbreak of the war is announced by the Hon. F. Jones, Minister of Defence. The draft will contain pilots who have completed their training and gained their wings at Wigram. Upon arrival in England they will serve with the Royal Air Force. They are at present on leave prior to their departure in the next few days. Mr Jones expressed regret that for obvious reasons it is not possible to mark the actual departure of the men by suitable ceremony. Although the draft is a small one it is of special significance because they will ibe the first draft of New Zealanders, to leave for overseas service since the war began.
