LOCAL AND GENERAL

The Borough Council will hold its monthly meeting this evening.

As is usual at this time of the year, the Borough Council’s works staff is devoting as much • attention as possible to cutting the long grass on many of the footpaths and on the roadsides in streets away from the business area.

A party of workmen made a start this morning with the remodelling of Sloane Street by removing the old footpath in front of Messrs C. T. Rickit and Sons’ premises. The intention is to widen the roadway, and seal it with bitumen in conformity with the rest of the roadway. The improvement will be much appreciated.

Another special excursion to the Centennial Exhibition is announced by the Railway Department. The train from Auckland passes through Te Awamutu at 9.12 p.m. on Friday next, reaching Wellington at 9 o’clock on Saturday morning. The return journey will be commenced at 2.45 p.m. on Sunday. The return fare from Te Awamutu is £1 12s 6d.

A very attractive programme has, we learn, been arranged for the concert at the local Empire Theatre on Wednesday evening, on behalf of the Red Cross Society. Novel dancing, Dutch scenes, a Christmas tree, an amusing play, and a cantata are all included in* the programme, with some of the most entertaining and capable artists obtainable giving their services. It is hoped there will be a very large attendance of the public, and thus help swell the Red Cross funds.

Congratulations were in order on Saturday for Mr E. H. Cucksey, the well-known Te Awamutu sportman, for his gelding Novikoff, having its second start of the day, won the Spring Handicap, IBmiles, at the Waikato Trotting Club’s spring meeting at Claudelands during the afternoon. Novikoff had firiished fifth in his earlier race, but was travelling well at the finish. In the longer race later in the day Novikoff forced the pace and eventually won by a head. Mr Cucksey also started his Lynn Rey in the Kaipaki Handicap, to gain fourth placing.
