TE RAU-A-MOA NOTES

TENNIS ACTIVITIES. (Own Correspondent.) Members of the local Tennis Club have been very busy doing up the court and clearing the ground in preparation for the annual opening day on Saturday in expectation of a most enjoyable day’s play. During the past week, following the Oparau spring cattle fair, between 300 and 400 head of cattle have passed through the settlement on the way to Waikato districts. Messrs Brandon Bros., of Hauturu, sent forward a large consignment of Hereford cows and calves to outside districts. The cattle were of good quality, and should do well on the low country. .Several district sheepmen are busy preparing for shearing, and a good clip is anticipated. It is expected that shearing will commence on Mr D. C. Noonan’s farm, “ Makuri,” this week.

Last week-end several local residents journeyed to Honikiwi to attend a dance in aid of the Honikiwi Social Club. Although there was not the usual large crowd present, a most enjoyable night’s dancing was indulged in. During the evening Miss J. Rattray (Honikiwi) and Miss R. Jenkins (Auckland) gave a demonstration of the new dance “ Boomps-a-Daisy,” which was greatly appreciated by the people present. Miss Phelan was a visitor to Kawhia for Labour week-end. Miss Pauline Benton returned to her home at Okoko Valley for Labour week-end.

Mr J. Easy, Pukekohe, is a visitor to Te Rau-a-Moa, and is the guest of Mr and Mrs Easy, Main Road. Mr Ned Kerr has been appointed stockmtan in charge on a development block at Te Kuiti under one of the Government development schemes, and took up his duties last Tuesday. Mr Kerr, who has been a resident of the Hauturu Valley for a number of years, will be greatly missed, for he took a keen interest in all sport.
