WHY NOT BOWLS?

CULT OF PHYSICAL FITNESS. Te Awamutu devotees of bowling will be interested in the remarks of Dr Featonby, Director of the Health Department of Victoria, as reported in the Melbourne Age recently. A wider adoption of the historic game of bowls was advocated by Dr Feattonby as a contribution to the national fitness plans—especially applicable to the older sections of society. He said he knew of no game more beneficial to middle-aged and older people, but in this country bowling greens were far too few, and the game was too expensive. In England the average working man was an arden bowler, due to the fact that the game was within his means. Dr Featonby threw out the suggestion that one of the more progressive municipalities might lay down a green and equip it for night playing as an experiment. He quoted the example of municipal golf links, which proved, he said, that a game which was once the monopoly of the rich and effeminate was now enjoyed by the average man and woman.
