WAIPA RUGBY UNION

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS. NO CHALLENGE FOR FINLAY CUP. Mr R. S. Sinclair, president, occupied the chair at the weekly meeting of the Waipa Rugby Unions’ management committee on Monday evening, and also present were Messrs F. J. Chunn, P. Stephens, J. L. Callaghan, H. Parker, I. Roberts, and H. T. Haselden (secretary). Regarding the case of R. Jackson, who it was alleged had played League football, the secretary traced Jackson’s career as a player, and commented on his eligibility to play the Rugby code.—After discussion it was agreed to defer the matter until next 1 meeting in order to give Jackson an opportunity to apply for reinstatement to Rugby football. The chairman reported tjiat after conferring with the Young Men’s Institute and the grandstand trustees, there was a possibility of a room at the grandstand being made available as a casualty room. The trustees were of opinion that a charge should be made for the use of the room by the Union. It was decided to convene a conference of the organisations using Albert Park, with a view to making an offer to the trustees for a permanent casualty room to be available. The chairman said that so far he had nothing to report concerning the project for flood-lighting one of the playing areas to permit of evening training. He explained that the local Electrical Power Board’s engineer was absent from town on important work in the Kawhia district. It was decided to seek an estimate of the cost. The secretary of the Oparau Club advised that Mr T. Dalziel had been asked to attend meetings as delegate for that body when Mr T. W. Scott was unable to attend.—Approved. The application on behalf of Pukeatua and Puahue Schools for the allocation of footballs was granted. The local St. John Ambulance Brigade asked to be advised of the date for the benefit match, and the secretary was instructed to reply that 29th July was the earliest date available. The ground committee was asked to effect improvement to the padding of the goal-posts at Albert Park, which the Ambulance officers reported to be. unsatisfactory. The Central Committee (Hamilton) in charge of the Stag Competition forwarded the amended draw, which was approved. The delegate to the ’Waikato Rugby Union supplied information concerning the Gwynne Shield and the Finlay Cup competitions this season. It was decided to challenge this year for the Finlay Cup, and to defer consideration regarding the Gwynne Shield pending receipt of a letter from the Waikato Union. It was decided to congratulate the Waikato Union’s senior representatives fre.m Waipa, it being commented that Waipa had five players in the team and one emergency all forwards. After discussion on insurance matters it was agreed that players pay insurance premiums and be covered while playing in non-competitive contests after the official opening of the Union’s season. The intention of the Union is that application of the motion be retrospective to the beginning of the current season. The P&ongia Club sought permission to play an outside team on sth
