SOCIAL FUNCTIONS

PIONEER SETTLERS FAREWELLED. I SOCIAL AT PUAHUE. The Puahue Hall was crowded on Friday evening, when members of every local family and others gathered to farewell Mr and Mrs Robert Baillie sen. and their daughter, who were among Pttahue’s earliest settlers. The early part of the evening was devoted to dancing to music supplied by Messrs Paul and Walker, while later delightful solos were rendered by Mrs Gordon Rollitt and Mrs Judge. Before supper Mr Cavanagh, speaking as an early neighbour of the guests of the. evening, referred to Mr Baillie’s sterling qualities. Mr W. G. Park, who was then invited to present to Mr and Mrs Baillie and Miss Baillie handsome gifts from the residents of Puahue, went back 28 years to describe how Mr Baillie had bought his land When it was in need of much hard work and money to make it profitable, and how after strenuous farming he had achieved success. As a family, the guests of the evening had always given their enthusiastic support to sport and social gatherings in the. district. Mr Park also mentioned that as chairman of the first school committee Mr Baillie had been successful in securing site, building and teacher in those early days in the progress of the district, when the. children had been required to walk either to Parawera or Hairini. In making the presentation of a handsome standing electric lamp to Mrs Baillie, and a Westminster chiming clock to Mr Baillie, Mr Park extended the sincere good wishes, of all that life in their future Te Awamutu home would be blessed with happiness and good health. To Miss Baillie a beautiful camphor wood chest was given. Then as a gesture of goodwill from the .Puahue branch of the Women's Institute Mrs Cavanagh, the president, handed two beautiful bouquets. Mr Stratton thereupon asked Mr Baillie to accept a vegetable offering daintily arrayed in ribbons. After the musical honours supper was served and dancing continued until midnight, when the singing of Auld Lang Syne brought the evening to an end. Mr A. Dobbs acted as master of ceremonies for the dancing. EUCHRE EVENINGThe fortnightly euchre party held by Te Awamutu Boy Scouts Committee took place last evening in the Regent Lounge, and was well attended, a very enjoyable time being spent by all present.
