ORIGINAL VERSES. THE GARDEN AT “WHITBY.” (Marie Andersen.) There’s a small green gate by the roadway That leads into Fairyland, Where amid the trees and flowers There dwells an elfin band. If you are wishful to enter, Step softly over the ground, And hush your voice to a whisper: Be sure you make no sound. For elves arc asleep in odd corners, Ablaze with crimson and blue; Their tiny bright eyes would grow fearful If they were awakened by you. It’s only the diminutive mistress, Tending her garden with care, Who can lure with infinite patience A sleepy wee elf from his lair. But at night when the moonbeams are dancing All over the carpet of green If you hide by a shadowy creeper The wee elfin folk can be seen. They play where the moonlight is brightest, Or gaze in the gleaming pool; They sit nea» a pale waterlily, And climb'-up the mushroom stool. They peep' from a tall clump of rushes, And nounce on their brethren with glee, Join hands, and dance in the moonlight, As happy as happy can be. If ever I meet any elf folk (Wandering or lost or alone I’ll show them the wav to this garden, And never again will they roam.
