OBITUARY

MRS B. BUDDEN. The death occurred at Waitara on Wednesday night of Mrs Budden, relict of the late Benjamin Budden, one of the pioneer settlers in the Honikiwi (Otorohanga) district, at the age of 80 years. Mrs Budden was born at Nelson, the child of settlers who came out from England in 1842. After her marriage she accompanied her husband first to Masterton, then on in the Forty Mile Bush to Mangamahoe, and then to Pahiatua, where they resided for thirteen years, and then came to the Auckland province', Mr Budden acquiring a big block of unimproved country at Honikiwi. They resided there for 25 years, and removed to Waitara to live in retirement. Mr Buddeir died nearly six years ago. Mrs Budden is survived by an adult family of four sons—Messrs B. H. (.Pokuru), G. B. (Ngaroto), Wallace (Devonport) and Allan (Waitara) and four daughters—Mesdames Syder (Wakefield, Nelson), Rattray (Honikiwi), Sole (Warea, Taranaki) and McDell (Whangarei). Mrs Budden was a fine type of pioneer, and was respected and admired for her neverfailing kindliness. As an example of her hardihood she frequently travelled many miles on foot to assist families experiencing hardship, and only a few months ago she undertook a trip by air from New Plymouth to Nelson—her first experience of air travel.
