OTOROHANGA NEWS

TOPICS OF THE HOUR. (Our Resident Representative.) WINTRY WEATHER. Wintry weather conditions have characterised mid-June in this territory. During the past week a large amount of rain has fallen and as a consequence all rivers and streams are running high and there is a considerable amount of dead water on the low-lying flats alongside the waterways. PLUNKET SOCIETY. The ladies of the Otorohanga branch of the Plunket Society organised a Copper Trail in the main street on Friday last with a view to augmenting the local funds. It was evident that coppers were plentiful—by the long trails of coins which were steadily extended throughout the afternoon. The financial results, ascertained by the long count, disclosed that no less than £l6 6s was thus raised. ON THE DAIRY FARMS. As has been the practice in recent years in the climatically favoured Northern King Country, large numbers of cows will be producing butterfat throughout the winter months, thus providing all-the-year-round revenue for many dairymen who calculate their operations to bring about this return. There are ample stocks of ensilage, hay and root crops to sustain the cows during their winter lactation period, while there is good shelter provision on most modern dairy farms in this territory. The local factories will remain open for the manufacture of butter throughout the year, thus keeping large staffs in regular employment. It may be noted, however, that all-the-year-round dairying is usually confined to holdings where the family do the whole work themselves.
