She was elderly, not very good-look-ing and quite unmarried. And as usual, she went to the well known seaside resort for Christmas week. During her stay at the hotel the manager took pity on her and introduced her to a middle aged widower, recently returned from overseas, who was also alone for Christmas. The. couple got on extremely well together. He insisted upon sitting at her table, and during the evening dances they were always the first on the floor. When Boxing Day came both spinster and widower returned to their respective homes, but the very next day she received a letter asking her to marry him and requesting an answer by telegram. Immediately she rushed to the post office. “How much does it cost to send a telegram?’’ she demanded. “Nine words for sixpence,’’ she was told. A few hours later her admirer was surprised to receive the following reply: “Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.”
