DEATH OF A MAORI
INQUEST AT OTOROHANGA. (Our Resident Representative.) An inquest was held at the Otorohanga Courthouse yesterday morning, before Mr R. M. Somerville, district coroner, regarding the death at Pirongia Road, of a Native named Te Whare Moana, 57 years of age, who had not been attended by a doctor, although he had been in bad health for the past five months. Constable Edward McDonnell conducted proceedings. Haromi Kane, wife of the deceased, stated that she resided at Raukokere, Waihou Bay. Her husband came to Pirongia Road about a month ago to stay with friends. He had suffered from a complaint of the chest. A school teacher of Te Kaha, named Mr Kato, obtained medicine for him. Mrs. Kato said her husband had bronchitis. She noticed that at times her husband’s legs swelled considerably. He often had bouts of coughing, and, at times, nearly choked. He was not able to walk very far. He remained in bed all day of the 29th inst (May). He wgs in bed at 8 a.m. and started to cough—when suddenly he took a deep breath and expired. Her husband was a native of Raukokere. Dr R. C. Bonnington stated that he had examined the body of deceased. There were no marks of violence. After the examination, and upon hearing the statement of Horomi Kane, he was of the opinion that death was due to cardio renal disease following chronic bronchitis. After the evidence of Constable McDonnell had been heard, the coroner found that the deceased died at.Waiwhakata Block, Otorohanga, on the 30th of May from cardio renal disease following chronic bronchitis.
