CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MONTHLY MEETING. GENERAL BUSINESS DEALT WITH. The president, Mr W. Jeffery, presided at the monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday evening, and there was a good attendance of members. The president extended a very cordial welcome to Mr D. H. Cavers, representing the Te Awamutu branch ot the Farmers’ Union, in succession to the late Mr A. T. Bryant. New members elected were Messrs D. J. McAlpine, R. C. Judd and G. A. Gibbs. SPORTS COUNCIL. Mr Warburton directed attention to the fact that last week the Minister announced the personnel of the Sports Council, and suggested that the Chamber convene a meeting of presidents and secretaries of all sports organisations in the district. It. was decided to ask all sports bodies to be represented at a confer ence as a preliminary step towards getting a District Council appointed. SECRETAR Y RETIRES. The president announced that at last meeting of the Council, Mr Jour dain had intimated his intention to resign the secretaryship within the next few weeks, after filling that office for about sixteen years. He had well earned his rest from at least some of the public duties he had shouldered, and in his retirement from the secretaryship of the Cham ber he would have the good wishes of his fellow members. POLICE PROTECTION. The Commissioner of Police acknowledged the Chamber’s request for additional police protection for Te’ Awamutu, and said he was fully aware of the position, and when any re-allocation of officers was being made he would bear in mind the representations, and advise the Chamber as soon as possible. It was mentioned that if an extra officer were appointed, that would mean that a sergeant would be appointed, and probably there would be no more street duty after nightfall than at. present obtains. SOCIAL SERVICES. The secretary, Associated Chambers of Commerce, Wellington, wrote on the subject of social services proposed by the Government, .and stated that a questionnaire had been sent to the Committee of Inquiry, seeking elucidation of some of the many unexexplained points. HOSPITAL BOARD. Mr Warburton referred Io the Hospital Board representation, by which one member represents the boroughs of Te Awamutu, Ngaruawahia and Huntly. A member for that constituent district may reside at Huntly, and he would know little or nothing about the needs of Te Awamutu, especially in the matter of charitable aid administration. He proposed that the Waikato Hospital Board be asked, if .the law allows, to consider bringing a change in the areas, so that contiguous areas (boroughs and surrounding ridings of counties) could be substituted for the present basis. —Mr Annibal seconded, and the motion was carried unanimously. BUSINESS DIRECTORY. A list was tabled showing that there are at present 206 businesses in Te Awamutu. A DANGEROUS POLE. Mr F. Parsons called attention to an electric light pole at the junction of Alexandra and Goodfellow Streets that he regarded as dangerous, but. he ' was informed the Borough Council, the previous evening, had approved an , application by the Power Board to shift it to a better location.
