THE SHOOTING SEASON

AN INAUSPICIOUS OPENING. NOT UP TO EXPECTATIONS. The shooting season this year opened inauspiciously on Monday, and the results, so far, can generally be stated as disappointing. Places where numerous birds had been seen before the opening day, did not shoot up to expectations and generally the returns were poor. Ducks, for some inexplainable reason, sem to have suddenly become' very scarce and in one local instance only is a good bag reported, 24 ducks having fallen to two guns. The* best recorded shot of pheasants locally was eleven birds between two guns. Poor bags were reported in the Te Kuiti district for the opening of the shooting season. AROUND OTOROHANGA. A GOOD BREEDING SEASON. (Our Resident Reporter.) Good sport is to be obtained throughout the Northern King Coun-

try. Owing to the early breeding season, duck are very plentiful along the waterways and on the swamps and lagoons, cf the territory. The young ducks are already well-grown. Pheasant are plentiful in the hinterland and fairly numerous on th - more settled level lands, while pukeko are very numerous on the swamps in the vicinity of Otorohanga and Kio Kio. It is permitted to shoot pukeko for the first 14 days of the season only. Black swan is said to be plentiful on th© Aotea and the upper reaches of the Kawhia Harbour. It is permitted to shoot 15 ducks and five swans daily this season, which will extend to June 30. The good work done by the Auckland Acclimatisation Society and its Otorohanga sub-branch is reflected in the present satisfactory game popula- j tion of the Northern King Country. 1
