THE BUTTER MARKET
NEW -ZEALAND AT 1295. 2s HIGHER THAN DANISH. Private advices received in Te Awamutu from London state that the butter market is firm. New Zealand butter is quoted at 1295, Australian at 128 s and Danish at 1275. The price of 129 s in London is equivalent to Is f.o.b., or 2d above the guaranteed price. A produce firm operating in the North and Midlands of England states that the margin between Danish and British Empire butters is now very narrow. One of the largest buyers in the North of England considers that the margin between Empire and Danish butter is not likely to be as great in the future as in the past. One factor which will in the future account for a substantial quantity of butter going into consumption is that the British Army is now using Empire butter, whereas in the past it used a large quantity of margarine. A recent fall in Continental butter values has been due to some extent to the efforts of the Danes to keep their market in the North of England, where during the past few months Colonial butter has been obtaining a greater sale. The Danish price fell by 7s during one week in March. This took place notwithstanding the fact that for April the quota into Germany for Danish butter will be 20 per centum greater than that allowed for March.
