TOPICS OF THE HOUR. NOVEMBER WEATHER. (Our Resident Representative) Rain fell at Otorohanga on ten days of last month, a total fa 1 of 3.39 in. the heaviest being on the 24th, when 1.29 ins. was recorded. The day temperatures averaged 72 degrees and the night temperatures 47 degrees. The highest day temperature occurred on the last day of the month when 89 degrees in the shade was registered. The December weather so far has been humid generally, with several heavy rainfalls. CITY LIBRARIAN. The Auckland City Librarian, Mr James Barr, has been a recent visitor to Otorohanga on matters in connection with new library books the Government propose to place in small town libraries. He stated that the State intended to spend £3,000 on books of serious interest during- the current year, and the plan was to give 15 books every four months to libraries in towns of 'ess than 2000 inhabitants, provided the local authorities give a similar number of books. These would be lent free of charge to all readers. PARENTS’ DAY. The teachers and pupils of the Otorohanga consolidated District High School, promoted their annual “At Home” to parents on Friday last, when there was a very large gathering from all parts of the district. The parents were shown around the various class-rooms, wnere the work of the pupils was on display. During the beautiful afternoon exhibition dances and exercises were executed by the children and among these the maypole dances were pleasing- features. The elder girls were dressed in red, white and blue during their competitions—which provided a very spectacular effect. The mouth-organ choruses by the lads’ band was thoroughly enjoyed, while athletic events contributed tc the p’easure of an enjoyable afternoon’s outing. RIFLE CLUB’S SHOOT. At the opening shoot: for the Holmes’ Trophy on the Otorohanga Defence Rifle Club’s range over 300 and 500 yard ranges, the shooting conditions were somewhat difficult, nevertheless the standard of shooting was universally high. The following- were the principal scores registered:—
