PEDIGREE JERSEYS
SALE OF IMPORTED BULLS. TOP PRICE 560 GUINEAS. Unusual interest was created yesterday by the sale in Auckland of 11 pedigree Jersey bulls, which had been sent to the Dominion by Mr Wallace MacMonnies, one of the leading Jersey importers in North America. The 12 animals sent to New Zealand were quarantined for 60 days after arrival. Among the large number of people present were some of the leading Jersey breeders of the Dominion.
The sale was an innovation, as the majority of the bulls were aged. One of the bulls was withdrawn from the sale, and the average price obtained for the remaining 11 was 287gns. The top price of 560gns was paid by Mr W. S. McEwan, of Cambridge, for a three-year-old animal, Susie’s Oxford Design, who was junior champion at the National Dairy Show of America in 1935, and well represents the Design quality, which is outstanding in the world to-day. The high price of 525gns was paid for a rising eight-year-old, Sybil’s Star Gamboge, by Dr G. Walker, of Whangarei. It is claimed that this bull is the most outstanding type of Jersey seen in the Dominion. It was grand champion of the National Dairy Show of America in 1934. Another outstanding purchase was that of a three-year-old, Noble’s Design, by Mr T. Smith, of Otorohanga, who paid 400gns. The bull has a pedigree noted for type and production. Prices paid for other animals dold were as follows:—3logns, by Mr A.. J. Arthur, of Morrinsville; 290gns, by Dr G. Walker, of Whangarei; 280gns, bv Mr W. T. Luxton, of Matangi; 190gns, by Mr J.
