WAIPA RUGBY UNION

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS. A SCRUM MACHINE. Mr R. S Sinclair (president) occupied the chair at the meeting of the Waipa Rugby Union management committee on Monday evening, and .:lso present were Messrs G. Lawrie, H. Worthington, P. Stephens, H. P. Ensor, and the secretary, Mr H. T. Haselden. The Junior Advisory Board reported having considered Te Kuiti’s letter re the Teddy Shield competition, and had decided that as no nominations other than Te Awamutu District High School had been lodged there should be no competition this season.—Approved. It was decided to allot the complimentary tickets for the match, South Africa v. Combined Waikato-King Country-Thames Valley, at Hamilton on Wednesday of next week, to the president and Mr G. Gifford (a life member of the Union).

Several invitations for the ball to be held at Frankton in honour of the South African team were received. Otorohanga Union accepted Saturday, 24th inst. for the senior rep. match with Waipa at Te Awamutu, and asked for details of the Waipa junior rep. team’s visit to Otorohanga on the same date.—Referred to Mr Worthington. In connection with the senior rep. game Mr R. L. Adams was appointed referee, Mr Sinclair manager, and Mr F. E. Waters, line umpire.

Maniapoto Union suggested August 14th as the date for the elimination match for the Peace Cup, between Waipa and Maniapoto, to be played at Te Kuiti.—Agreed to. Mr G. L. Daniell, Te Mawhai, wrote re a scrum machine he had constructed for the training of Waipa teams. He .said he had gone to considerable trouble with the machine, and had conveyed it to the training shed several weeks ago, but so far as he could learn a full scrum had not been set against it. “If the machine is definitely of no use to the Union I can find a better use for the material, as also, I have no doubt users of the training shed can find better use for the room it takes up. For the information of any who may challenge the value of the materials, 1 may state that the springs alone used in its construction are worth something over 30s each. As the machine was made, and was given, in an honest endeavour to assist local football, may I respectfully suggest that some member or members of the Union be instructed to give the machine a fair trial, and report to the Management committee on its usefulness or otherwise.”—lt was decided to thank Mr Daniell fcr his work in constructing the machine, and to arrange a further trial before expressing an opinion on its usefulness. Accounts totalling £1 10s were passed for payment. The Waikato Union secretary forwarded details for the assembly of junior teams engaged in the curtainraiser to the Springboks match at Hamilton next week.—lt was decided to ask the Waikato Union to make the cost of assembly, estimated at £2 15s, a charge against the gate receipts. Five of the reserved-seat tickets for the Springboks match were allotted, and the balance will be allotted next Monday evening, according to the application (in writing) received. JUNIOR ADVISORY BOARD. At last meeting of the Waipa Rugby Union’s Junior Advisory Board (Mr W. Whitton, presiding), it was decided that owing to none of the District High Schools, othei- than Te Awamutu, nominating for the Teddy Shield Competition, there is to be no contest for the trophy this year. Owing to the junior competition extending to the end of August, it was decided to incorporate the Doyle Cup competition in the second round of the championship.

The senior team to represent Waipa at Otorohanga next Saturday is: B. Quin, L. Young, K. Tippett, H. Bennett, L. Preston, J. Hanna, L. Wilson, J. Turney, L. McAlpine, W. Daniell, C. Jowsey, A. Thomson, IW. Ngahoe, W. Nicoll and H. Grant. Reserves; Forwards, M. Grace and H. Wynyard; backs, M. Bell and Cunningham. Waipa junior rep. players should note that they are required to attend for practice at the grandstand training sheds this evening at 7.30. The selector has chosen 22 players, and from them he is to select the representative fifteens for next Saturday at Otorohanga and the following Wednesday at Hamilton (a curtain raiser to the South Africa v. Combined team contest. The Waipa third grade competitions will be continued next Saturday with two matches at Albert Park. Referees appointed for next Saturday locally are: Senior rep. game, Mr R. L. Adams. Third grade: Old Boys v. Pirongia, Mr L. T. Brown; High School v, Te Awamutu, Mr J. Madgwick. Mr C. Sergeant is to referee the junior rep. gamq at Otorohanga. Mr W. Bell, former Waipa rep. fullback, refereed the third grade match at Pirongia last Saturday, owing to the appointed official being unable to attend. “Bill” did quite well, according to accounts, and maybe he can be prevailed upon to handle the whistle more often, now that he has tried his prentice hand, and thus set an example to many “authorities” who content themselves with loud-voiced criticism of referees —from the sideline — but who take good care not to have their knowledge of the game given practical tests. OTOROHANGA MATCHES. (Our Own Representative.) A good gallery of spectators witnessed the final knock-out game, between Otorohanga and Kio Kio juniors, on the Otorohanga Island Reserve on Saturday afternoon. Otorohanga proved the victors by 14 points to 5. Mr C. Hoar was the referee. The junior contest between Kio Kio and Te Kuiti was a fine game and resulted in Kio Kio winning by 11 points to 10. Mr T. McCready refereed. The contests indicated that there are a number of very promising Rugby players among the juniors.
