CYCLING
FOURTEEN AND A HALF MILES HANDICAP. A CLOSE FINISH. Eleven cyclists lined up for the start of a 148-mile race from Sloane Street, past the Mental Hospital, and back via Puniu Road to Te Awamutu. L. Melville was the first away, followed by W. Couper and A. Coxhead; next away were A, Gyde, J. Robertson, and L. Harris. These were followed at intervals by H. McKenzie, G. Allen, J. A. Robertson, and H. Liddington. The limit man rode a fine race, and for half the journey held off the backmarkers, but Jim Robertson and A. Gyde, riding perfectly, forged ahead. At the home turn J. Robertson came away; to win from A. Gyde, with Coxhead not far away. W. Couper was fourth, and then came the scratch men. The placings were:— Jim Robertson 1 A. Gyde 2 A. Coxhead 3 W. Couper .* 4 Fastest time, J. A. Robertson; second fastest time, H. Liddington.
