BOROUGH COUNCIL

REGULAR FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. ESTIMATES CONSIDERED. At the regular fortnightly meeting of the Te Awamutu Borough Council on Monday evening the Mayor (Mr G. Spinley) presided, and there were in attendance Crs G. Gifford, G. O. Jourdain, D. Wallace, W. J. North, A. Brown, H. C. Rainey, J. A. Maxwell, and J. C. Montefiore. The Mayor reported the convening of a meeting to consider the arrangement of Coronation celebrations at To Awamutu, but the attendance was very disappointing. Discussion had been deferred until a better attendance could be secured. Comment was made about the delay in altering the curvature of Kihikihi Road near the racing stables, and a request was made that the work be expedited.—A request to this effect is to go to the Public Works engineer. Cr Montefiore reported that the authorised work in George Street was nearing completion, but before the work is finished and tire workmen shifted, the very bad footpath should have attention. An anonymous donor had contributed £5 toward the cost of concreting the path provided the work is pushed forward. Cr Wallace asked whether the Council should not have an official report from the Works Committee! (Laughter.)

Cr Montefiore said he had anticipated the last speaker. He had discussed the donation with another member of tlie committee, end had his approval that this work should have precedence.

The Mayor said if two members of the committee were in agreement it was futile following the procedure of referring tlie offer back to the committee. It was for the Council to decide, having regard to other authorised works and finances available.

It was decided to accept the donation and authorise the concreting of this path as suggested. The Finance Committee reported having prepared draft estimates of expenditure for the current year. The full Council was asked to hold a special meeting to go fully into the details of the estimates. Cr Montefiore asked if the draft was final and binding? The Mayor said it was open for review, and it tlie Council wished to increase the expenditure they would require to consider the provision of revenues either by an increased rate or by some other means.

Cr Jourdain asked that each Councillor be supplied with a full copy of the draft for consideration before the special meeting.—lt was decided to hold a special meeting on Thursday evening. The Te Awamutu Returned Soldiers’ Association advised that the N.Z. Association intends to present to the citizens of Te Awamutu an illuminated address expressing the Association’s appreciation of tlie work and efforts during the years following on 1914.—The function will be held on 3rd May, and the Mayor and Mayoress, Councillors and their wives, officers of the Council and their wives, together with ex-Mayors and Mayoresses, were invited to be the guests of the local Association on that occasion.—Accepted.

Hon. P. Fraser, for the Prime Minister, sent further details of the State function for the Coronation celebrations. It was suggested that this programme would possibly serve as a guide for local functions.—Referred to the public meeting. The Department of Internal Affairs called attention to the need to conduct a biennial election of members to the Fire Board at the end of May. The Council was asked to advise the names ot the Council’s nominees as soon as possible. Councillors H. C. Rainey and W. J. North were re-nominated. The Te Awamutu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club asked permission to start and finish the road cycle races in the borough. All by-laws will be respected and precautions against accident taken. Permission was granted. Te Awamutu School Committee applied for permission to hold a Paddy’s Market in Alexandra and Market Streets on 29th April. The idea had been for a carnival in the school grounds, but the closing of the school had altered the arrangements.—Granted, subject to two stands only.
